“Spirit of Riddle Creek” is a journey into the beauty of spring around the Cherokee National Forest in Northeast Tennessee. Catherine’s debut exhibition in April 2014 at The Gallery @ Barr Photographics was inspired by images from her own backyard in Southwest Virginia, and was very well received. She continues her exploration into hue saturation, value contrasts and the process of lifting color for added depth and texture using the spiritual beauty of Riddle Creek/Bluff City area as her inspiration.
“Studying the rhododendrons, Morel mushrooms, colorful turtles and other images of spring that this area provides, allows me to push the limits of watercolor, including composition as well as pigment. I have drawn off of the overwhelming response of my debut exhibition and am excited with the direction and personality of this new show. Seeing the surprise on people’s faces when they are told these paintings are created with traditional watercolors, inspires me to challenge this medium even further.”
